The Journey of Kyle Milligan

The Journey of Kyle Milligan

Kyle Milligan is a Liberty University student who is studying Advertising and Public Relations. Clothed with such a big personality, her professor noticed her and referred her to Humbly I Serve! The LU professor thought she and Humbly I Serve’s Business Development Director, Haley Collins would get along great. Although Kyle didn’t know much about the organization, she took a leap of faith and met with Haley.

She immediately felt a connection with Humbly I Serve, specifically the project HIS Kids that offers positions with our Seaside Adventures Camp in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Because of her love for missions, camp counseling, and St. Thomas, V.I. joining with this project was the perfect fit.

Of course, journeying to an island, even though it is part of the U.S., there is bound to be some surprises. She describes the most difficult part of her journey as being unprepared for the many cultural differences. She had to really rely and trust in the Lord to appropriately respond to the campers and their parents.

She is changed forever.

She immediately fell in love with the children she met and each has made an impact on her life forever. She has a connection with the children and talks to many weekly. She hadn’t even landed in her home country before she knew God was calling her to be involved in long term missions.

Kyle talks about Abel:

When asked what experience she will never forget, there was no hesitation on her part.

“Oh, there is no competition that the kid who forever changed my life was Abel. Abel is a 15 year old boy with an amazing story. Abel was always the kid acting up and getting into trouble during camp, but he is an incredible boy. Abel is the oldest of 3 children. He and his two siblings John and Sarah lost their parents when they were very young. Instead of going into Foster Care, their aunt in St Thomas decided to adopt them. They live in a tiny house with 6 other kids and many times have to go beg for money in the street to buy food. You would never know any of this just by talking to Abel, he is one of the funniest and most caring kids I’ve ever met. He wants to be best friends with everyone and after that friendship is made, he will always have your back. I only discovered Abel’s story after sitting down and having a serious 20 minute conversation with him that changed my life forever. “How could a kid who has lost everything still have so much joy”?

Kyle has a huge burden to help people and is filled with joy she simply cannot contain in ministering with us in St. Thomas, V.I.

Let’s talk about Vanessa Park

Let’s talk about Vanessa Park

Who is she?

Vanessa is studying Public Relations and Advertising at Liberty University and always wanted to work for a non-profit organization. Immediately speaking with her, you can feel her warm heart and how it’s focused on people. She ultimately strives to meet them where they are and help in any way possible.

She defines herself as a west coast girl who grew up in California and Colorado, thrilled to hopefully one day go back. Her ideal dream job would be to do something that allows her to have a family and work while still being a wife and mom.

Her father has been a huge inspiration to her throughout this career process. Her inspiration with him comes from how he’s established his own business nearly 20 years ago, creating his own marketing and designing ads himself. With his wealth of business experience, she feels at ease getting any type of advice from him.

Vanessa at Humbly I Serve:

As a Public Relations Intern at Humbly I Serve, she has gotten an astronomical amount of insight into what a job after college will entail.

She has learned so much in her time here; the greatest benefits have to do with nonprofits functions, establishments, and the creative thinking that goes into working at an organization. All these skills she will use for a long time.

In addition, Humbly I Serve has taught her how to affordably plan and execute good events and campaigns, helping her to reach her aspirations and follow through with her dream of working with children.

Vanessa reminisces about her first day at Humbly I Serve “…it was crazy, but I immediately knew I was gonna learn a lot”.
