New Basketball Court Coming to St. Thomas!

“If there is basketball, I’ll be at camp every morning right on time… even early,” previous camper Jaquane said.

The one thing the kids at Seaside Adventure Camp love is basketball! The court is a place of competition, team building and a place where they can be a star!

“I love basketball! I am going to play in the NBA and help take care of my mom and sisters,” Jaquane explained. After his mom was diagnosed with cancer, Jaquane was determined to help provide for his mom and family needs. Right now, the 12-year-old cuts grass to help raise money to go to camp and help provide for his family. He and his sisters even share basketball shoes because they cannot buy two pairs.

Jaquane is currently saving up to buy a pair of Lebron’s, to help him prepare for the NBA.

Last year, the Sherwin family expressed interest in serving with Humbly I Serve (HIS) in a service project way. After discussion and seeing the needs for positive activities for kids the Sherwin and Lucas families signed up with Humbly I Serve to take on a much-needed basketball court project!

This court will be placed at Grace Baptist Church in the Fortuna community that HIS has been working in for five years.

Together, the families make the perfect team; the Sherwin’s have had experience in pouring concrete from previous missions trips and Ethan Lucas has worked multiple jobs in construction. They are excited to be able to use their past experiences to help expand the Humbly I Serve programs in St. Thomas!

This court will mean more than just fun for the kids. This project will enable Grace Baptist to have even more resources to reach out to kids throughout the year. Humbly I Serve is excited to offer sports outreach and youth ministry internships in conjunction with Grace Baptist Church starting this summer. These internships are in St. Thomas and last between six weeks to four months. Students will have the opportunity to make an impact in the lives of kids like Jaquane.

“We know Melinda personally and her heart for the kids of St. Thomas. This is something we want to be a part of. We want to impact the kids even though we can’t be there for camp,” Rene Sherwin said.

The team’s goal is to pour the concrete, paint the lines, and set up the hoops-all in one week! Youth outreach is one of Humbly I Serve’s focuses and since both families are involved in youth ministry here in the states, they understand the importance of impacting the younger generations. These families have captured the vision for long term relationship building and want to enable Humbly I Serve and Grace Baptist Church to make an even greater impact throughout the year.

“We love that HIS reaches people in a practical way to meet their spiritual needs,” Rene Sherwin said. “HIS has also made it easy to be a part of their organization and since we love what they do, we want to do anything we can to help spread the Gospel.”

The Sherwins and the Lucas’s leave June 8 for their week of impact! Pray for funding, supplies and safety as they prepare and go! This trip will give children in the Fortuna area the opportunity to be involved in sports, but they also spend time in a Christ centered environment.

Melinda and Haley’s St. Thomas Adventures

Thankyou picThe month of March was exciting, overwhelming at times, testing, and a blessing to Humbly I Serve’s Chief Officer Melinda Wilson and Senior Director Haley Barker! Starting on March 11, Melinda and Haley flew to St. Thomas in the Caribbean and covered a lot of ground during the following 10 days or so. We were so excited to welcome them back to the U.S. and hear about all that happened during their trip. From fundraising to meeting with organizations to catching up with past campers, it has a been a wild ride and we could not wait to tell our followers all about it!

With Seaside Adventure Camp just a couple months away now, Melinda and Haley did all they could to prepare for the upcoming two weeks of fun, sun, and Jesus with the kids of St. Thomas. They completed a lot of necessary marketing, fundraising and the overall framework for camp. They met with several sponsors and organizations such as Blue Water Bible College, Grace Baptist Church, Best Western, Frenchman’s Reef, Senior Frog, and WALA Paintball among others.

We are thrilled and thankful to announce several donations and partnerships such as the following:

  • Senior Frogz is offering their pool, volleyball court and lunch for a day
  • West Indies Co. is donating juice, soda and water
  • Best Western Emerald Beach is partnering with us for a beach day
  • the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts has awarded us a grant
  • Caribbean Buzz Helicopter
  • Seven Seas Corporation, Quantico Consulting Services, Spartan Concrete made generous donations
  • Marriott Frenchman’s Reef – the Cove is holding a fundraiser to help support campers who may need financial help to attend camp

Melinda and Haley were also able to reconnect with a previous camper named Jacquian, who had invited them to his basketball game. As they spent the evening with jacquian, he could not stop talking about last year’s camp and how he hopes to come again this year. His improvement in school and among his peers since last year was an incredible testimony to Melinda and Haley. They were so happy to catch up with him and see how well he was doing.IMG_3205

Overall, Melinda and Haley’s trip was a great success and the team is grateful for these new partnerships as well as the continuous support in the Virgin Islands. Melinda and Haley want to extend a warm-hearted thank you to everyone in St. Thomas that donated items, sponsored and partnered with us. Although things are beginning to come together for Seaside, there is still so much to be done. We still have spots open for male camp counselors and we are also seeking camper sponsorships. For only $85, you can sponsor a child to come to camp for two weeks and give him or her an adventure of a lifetime. Finally, we are in need of many crafts and are looking for people, churches, businesses and organizations to host a craft drive. For any more information about Seaside Adventure Camp, our organization or to sponsor a child, visit our website.

Camp Counselor Positions Still Needed for Seaside Adventure Camp

We need YOU to contribute to the work God is doing through Humbly I Serve in St. Thomas

IMG_2599

Are you looking for a new and exciting adventure this summer? Do you want to be a difference maker? We want you to partner with Humbly I Serve on our mission trip to Seaside Adventure Camp this summer and help bring needed change to the island of St. Thomas! Much work still needs to be done to point these people to Jesus every day; we must not only help through spiritual provision, but physical as well.

As one of the Virgin Islands (located in the Caribbean), St. Thomas is a beautiful, exotic, and breath-taking place to live. However, most of natives have never heard of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Many of the children are forced to bypass the normal pleasures of childhood in order to provide financially for their families. Rather than playing with their friends or doing homework, they spend their weeknights and weekends soliciting to strangers simply to help put dinner on the table.

IMG_2975For two weeks of the summer, Humbly I Serve’s project, HIS Kids, brings Seaside Adventure Camp to the shores of St. Thomas. We strive to bring uplifting activities to relieve children and teens from the pressures of life such as teen pregnancy, broken families, gang violence, drugs, and alcohol. Whether it’s working in the kitchen, playing kickball with the youngsters, leading Bible studies, or waking up just five minutes earlier every morning to pray for the thousands of lost souls, we need your help! Whatever your passions or skills, you will be able to use them to further the kingdom of God and show Christ to the people of St. Thomas.

If you are interested in being a camp counselor for Seaside Adventure Camp this June 18-July 5, you can check out our website for more information or to apply!

Create hope, be the change, join the movement.

Inspirational

From Personal Experience

From Personal Experience

My name is Daniel Bartlett and last summer I decided to do my internship at Humbly I Serve. I enjoyed their mission and saw that God was doing something there, although I didn’t have the full blast of exactly what it was. It also met a requirement for my Journalism degree, so I came on board, and looking back on it now, I’m glad I did.

I spent the whole summer working as their Content Manager, working on newsletters, sending out emails, crafting press releases, among other tasks. And this was like other jobs that I have done, but what made it a real special place for me was being surrounded by good people whom I enjoyed their company, but also ones who really had a heart for the Lord.

It probably took about a month into my internship before God really started working on my heart. I did a lot of work with the His Vision Project mostly. And we all know how it is; you hear some statistics, see some photos of the hurt and turmoil that is amounting in these other countries, and your heart becomes stirred. All of which happened to me, but even more so, because I was the one doing a lot of the research that went into gathering these facts, and really digging into how the other part of the world lives, and what I saw shocked me.

I’ve never been out of the United States, but I know that there are some hurting people living in some pretty rough places all around the world. We’ve all seen it somewhere or sometime, probably on TV or online or on a billboard; People who are hungry, thirsty, in pain or with disease. This is so sad to see, people suffering, struggling with no one to help them. But is there really no one to help them? The even sadder fact is that there are more than enough people to help. Although many will see, very few will actually do something about it.

And I’m not just talking about people who are able to give money, although this is a great means of helping, but even just giving their time, their company and just being there with these people to love them when they have no one else to do so. If Christ was still walking this Earth, I believe that he would be out there on the front lines, ladling food for the hungry at a soup kitchen or helping a woman carry fresh water back to her village for her children or just sitting, listening to a person’s story, because everyone has one. So what’s yours? What’s mine?

I am realizing more and more each day that we’ve only got one shot at this life, and every day we are one step closer to eternity, and tomorrow is never guaranteed. I just found out this week that my friend’s brother just came down with a rare form of bone cancer, and he is not even twenty years old. Nothing is guaranteed. Nothing is lasting. Nothing but one and that is God. He is unchanging and his promises stand true.

And when we stand at those pearly gates, and stand before our God, what will we have to show for ourselves? That we accumulated wealth, had nice things and lived a comfortable life, or that we pushed through the muck and grime, gave all we had and held nothing back, and now, huffing and puffing out of breath, we stand before Jesus at God’s right hand, probably a little smelly and sweating, feeling accomplished and confident. Christ smiles and hands us a white robe, and we hear, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”

This is beautiful music to my ears, but this is ahead of us for all who believe. But now is not the time to linger, now is the time to act, to persevere, to take ourselves where we may not always be comfortable going, do things we may not want to do. Or maybe you do, if your heart is in the right place. I know I only have one shot, and I want to make it count. How about you?

Let’s Get Innovative!

Let's Get Innovative!

We are so excited to announce our 2nd annual Innovative Conference this April 10, 2014 from 7:00pm – 8:30pm! This will be located at Liberty University’s Snowflex.

The Innovative Conference is a time that allows you to discuss what is going on within our organization and how you can get involved in changing the world!

We believe every life has significance to God, and that not everyone is as fortunate as we may be. The simple gift of your time could be the sole catalyst in a person’s life that moves them on to doing great things, creating a contagious fever of change.

That is why we host the Innovative Conference each year, to get the word out that God is alive and moving and at work. This conference allows you to get involved by sharing ideas, hosting events, going on trips and being a part of what we are doing, regardless of financial commitment.

Come out to hear about ways in which you can serve the community and the world. We have several opportunities to serve locally through internships, CSER credit for students, volunteer staff positions, events, and craft or eyewear drives. We also have a number of upcoming mission trips and long-term mission positions in St. Thomas and Haiti.

This will be an inspiring evening, fueled by caffeine, chocolate and good ideas! Come learn about several ways you can get involved at H.I.S Ministry (Humbly I Serve) and The His Vision Project, with donations from the White Hart and CAO Chocolates.

As we all work together to create an eternal change through Christ, we would love to get you involved as well!

The Journey of Kyle Milligan

The Journey of Kyle Milligan

Kyle Milligan is a Liberty University student who is studying Advertising and Public Relations. Clothed with such a big personality, her professor noticed her and referred her to Humbly I Serve! The LU professor thought she and Humbly I Serve’s Business Development Director, Haley Collins would get along great. Although Kyle didn’t know much about the organization, she took a leap of faith and met with Haley.

She immediately felt a connection with Humbly I Serve, specifically the project HIS Kids that offers positions with our Seaside Adventures Camp in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Because of her love for missions, camp counseling, and St. Thomas, V.I. joining with this project was the perfect fit.

Of course, journeying to an island, even though it is part of the U.S., there is bound to be some surprises. She describes the most difficult part of her journey as being unprepared for the many cultural differences. She had to really rely and trust in the Lord to appropriately respond to the campers and their parents.

She is changed forever.

She immediately fell in love with the children she met and each has made an impact on her life forever. She has a connection with the children and talks to many weekly. She hadn’t even landed in her home country before she knew God was calling her to be involved in long term missions.

Kyle talks about Abel:

When asked what experience she will never forget, there was no hesitation on her part.

“Oh, there is no competition that the kid who forever changed my life was Abel. Abel is a 15 year old boy with an amazing story. Abel was always the kid acting up and getting into trouble during camp, but he is an incredible boy. Abel is the oldest of 3 children. He and his two siblings John and Sarah lost their parents when they were very young. Instead of going into Foster Care, their aunt in St Thomas decided to adopt them. They live in a tiny house with 6 other kids and many times have to go beg for money in the street to buy food. You would never know any of this just by talking to Abel, he is one of the funniest and most caring kids I’ve ever met. He wants to be best friends with everyone and after that friendship is made, he will always have your back. I only discovered Abel’s story after sitting down and having a serious 20 minute conversation with him that changed my life forever. “How could a kid who has lost everything still have so much joy”?

Kyle has a huge burden to help people and is filled with joy she simply cannot contain in ministering with us in St. Thomas, V.I.

Who is Josiah Johnson?

Who is Josiah Johnson?

He is a speech communications major at Liberty University and Communications Intern at Humbly I Serve!

Through his time at Humbly I Serve thus far, Josiah has learned an astronomic amount about himself, his career field, and nonprofit organizations.

Himself:

Josiah strives to one day be the voice of a cartoon character. He has doubt telling himself he can’t, but hey someone has to do it!

He aspires to be Mel Blanc who is the voice of the characters we love from Looney Toons, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety Bird, and Roger Rabbit.

Working at Humbly I Serve has allowed him to realize that dream is attainable and no longer something far fetched.

mel_blanc-thumb-200x249

This is Mel Blanc. See the similarities?

Career Field:

Josiah has learned how to work in groups and to put together campaigns, which is essential in any workforce!

Along with that, his writing skills have improved significantly through his use of professional emails.

He has received opportunities to give presentations about Humbly I Serve and to get the community on board.

Nonprofit Organizations:

Josiah mentions his nonprofit experience and says, “I learned how grassroots fundraising works on a day-to-day basis and the inner workings of a nonprofit. It is an eye opening experience working with an organization that relies on the Lord to provide for them. I had the opportunity to see the Lord provide in small ways in my projects. Each day we have two designated prayer times. I loved seeing how the Lord answered requests from day to day. Interning with Humbly I Serve taught me how to build good relationships with donors, staff and trip participants. I am so happy I had the chance to work so hard and gain valuable experience with a nonprofit.”

Interested in interning with us? We have positions available in an array of fields for Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters!
